Welcome to the Inaugural CAHS National E-Newsletter!
The past months have brought many changes at the National level. There are new faces (including mine) on the executive and board, a new Journal team, and now a newly-designed website and newsletter to help us connect with members, chapters, and aviation enthusiasts across the globe.
Change is good, so the old adage goes, but rest assured we are trying to balance innovation with tradition. The things that first attracted me to the CAHS - a sense of community and a passion for preserving aviation history - will be front and centre as we move forward.
The other thing change inevitably brings are a few delays. Fresh people, energy, and ideas are wonderful but learning curves take time to ascend, and projects time to implement by new (volunteer) hands. We appreciate your patience and understanding, and hope you will find in the coming weeks and months that the results were worth some bumps along the way.
Please take some time to explore the new site and feel free to contact me or the other members of the exec with your questions and concerns. You can also send me photos, events, requests for research help, and other materials for the newsletter. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Website Redesign!
If you've been to www.cahs.ca in the last few days you may have noticed we have completely redesigned the site. Since the summer we've been busy working with a web development firm and we'll continue to tweak the site and add more features - so check back often and don't forget to register for full member benefits!
48th Annual Convention
 The 2011 CAHS Convention and AGM will take place in Edmonton, Alberta from June 22-26th. The committee (chaired by yours truly) is working busily on accommodations, partnerships with other aviation organizations and companies, and a stellar schedule of events.
The theme is Edmonton: Gateway to the North, and talks will explore the rich aviation history of my new home town, the province of Alberta, and Canada's North. If you'd like to be on the speakers' roster we're doing an open call for submissions. Simply send a 200-word proposal and 50-word biographical note to dmchenail@gmail.com by January 15, 2011.

Journal Updates
The new Journal team has been hard at work and hopes you enjoyed your Spring issue. The Summer one will be hitting your mailboxes by the end of November and the elves are working hard to get you your Fall one by the holiday season.
Don't forget to check out the Journal sections of the website for a full index of back issues (and to purchase ones you may have missed), as well as for writing guidelines and to submit letters to the editor.

Calgary: Darrell Knight, author of "Buffalo Airways: the Story of an Airline" Thursday, November 18th.
Toronto: Saturday, November 20th "The history of 436 Transport Squadron" by Canadian Forces Captain Tim Brodie.
Ottawa: Thursday, November 25th J. Allan Snowie will share details from his recently published Collishaw and Company: Canadians in the Royal Naval Air Service, 1914-1918

For those of you who haven't yet heard, our very own Bill Wheeler has been selected for induction into Canada's Aviation Hall of Fame next year. This is a richly deserved honour and we'll be updating you on when and where the induction ceremony will take place and how to obtain tickets. Congrats, Bill!

Upcoming Events
 Vintage Wings of Canada is hosting a celebratory gala Saturday, November 13, 2010 at its hangar in Gatineau, Quebec. There are still tickets available through their website or by emailing events@vintagewings.ca (but tickets will not be sold at the door).
"Unsung Heroes - the Strength Behind the Uniform," a fundraiser for the Great Canadian Theatre Company and the Military Family Resource Centre - National Capital Region, is being held in Ottawa November 27, 2010. Get your tickets online, call 613-236-5196 or email at info@gctc.ca
Tickets are now on sale for the Spiral Dive Trilogy being put on by Workshop West Theatre in Edmonton from January 6-23, 2011. Episodes one through three have enthralled audiences at various fringe festivals across the nation, but this is the first time all three will be performed consecutively. This play where "the extremities of love, violent combat and the poetry of flight meet" is not to be missed!
History in the Making
 As some of you may know, I'm currently based out of Dawson, Yukon during a three-month writing residency at Berton House where I'm researching a history of aviation in the north.
One recent northern event that hasn't hit the news much is the hangar fire on Thursday, November 4th at Aklak Air (affiliated with Ken Borek Air) in Inuvik, NWT where three aircraft were lost.
From the available sources the aircraft in question are:
- DHC-6 Twin Otter 300 s/n 671, C-GZVH
- King Air A100 s/n B-194, C-GHOC
- Beech 99 s/n U-149, C-GKKB

In Memoriam
Ottawa member Sidney Van Dyck passed away peacefully Saturday, October 23, 2010 at the age of 83 years. Sid was a member of the Public Service of Canada for 35 years within the Canadian Hydrographic Service, from 1953-1986. The memorial service was held Monday, November 1, 2010 in Ottawa.
