Happy holidays and cheers to the coming new year! On behalf of the CAHS, I would like to thank all of our members who, over the holidays, gave the gift of a CAHS membership, and extend a very warm welcome our new members who received a membership as a gift!
Below you will find the last National e-newsletter of 2012. The CAHS has big plans for 2013 including - among many things - a revamped and interactive website, our Journal caught up to cover date, and our 50th anniversary celebration! In the coming year we are also exploring ways to expand the accessibility, reach, and exposure of the CAHS. If you have suggestions or ideas on how to build on these components, the Executive would love to hear from you!

This Month in Canadian Aviation History
1 December 1945: A.V. Roe Canada Ltd is Formed
 A.V. Roe Canada Ltd was established in 1945 when the U.K. based Hawker Siddeley Group acquired Victory Aircraft Ltd and their facilities in Malton, Ontario. The Avro plant opened with about 400 staff, most of whom had been kept on from wartime production.
In 1949, Avro Canada flew the Avro Jetliner - their first aircraft under the new company. Over the next decade, the company was responsible for manufacturing some of the most famous flying machines in Canadian aviation history including the CF-100 Canuck, CF-105 Arrow, & even the VZ-R Avrocar.
Within thirteen years of its inception, Avro Canada transformed into an industrial giant. At its peak it was the third-largest company in Canada and had over 50,000 employees.
Avro Canada was dissolved in 1962, and the Malton plant used for various initiatives until its demolition in 2004.

Journal Update
 They're here! December has been a great month for the CAHS Journal and by now you should have received both Volume 50-1 (Spring 2012) and 50-2 (Summer 2012). My issues actually arrived in my e-mail inbox just one week apart!
As you may know we have been working hard to catch up the production dates to "cover dates" while, at the same time, incorporating revised editorial processes and standards. Such a miraculous turnover could not have been possible without the tireless efforts of our Journal Editor, Terry Higgins, and our committed Journal Editorial Board.
An update from Terry on forthcoming issues:
Journal 50-3 (Fall 2012) is in the final post-proofreading stage of preparation. However the holiday interregnum, both here and at the printers and mailing house, presented a minor and unavoidable interruption. I will have it within the printer's workflow by Friday, 4 January or Monday, 7 January at latest. Timing from printer intake to mailing house delivery to Canada Post should be very similar to that experienced for 50-2 (a week or two at most).
Journal 50-4 (Winter 2012) is well advanced and should be within the printers workflow before the end of January, with similar production/delivery timeline expectations. The selected final content for Journal 51-1 (Spring 2013) is in editorial and layout development, and is therefore anticipated to be on time (early/mid April 2013 delivery).
Remember the CAHS rule: You will always get four Journals for every year you have paid your dues, no matter when they might arrive! If you have any comments or questions, contact Terry at editor@cahs.ca.
2013 CAHS National Convention
Plans are underway for our 50th Anniversary Convention in Ottawa this coming September. Details will be forthcoming as they become confirmed. In the meantime, the 50th Anniversary Committee needs your help if:

Visit cahs.ca to view our rotating blog feature. This month, Bruce McLeod and Mark Whittaker offer insight into the Canadian Aviation Heritage Centre and its recently finished replica of a 1926 Fairchild Model FC-2 "Razorback."
 They write: "The Fairchild FC-2 [...] emerged on 27 October 2012 from the Canadian Aviation Heritage Centre's workshops (at the Old Cow Barn on the Macdonald Campus of McGill University) after over 12 years of work. Built from scratch with original plans, and supplemented by the creativity, ingenuity, craftsmanship and enthusiasm of volunteers in the restoration team [...] this full scale 1926 'multi-tasker of the skies' aircraft is the first of several aviation projects currently underway at the CAHC."

CAHS Member News
 Mathias Joost was recently able to present Carl Vincent with his McIntyre Research Award. The Mac McIntyre Award is the annual CAHS Journal article award for outstanding research. The recipient is determined by a vote submitted by the readers of the Journal, and Carl's article "The North American Saga of Spitfire L1090" was chosen as the winner at the past CAHS Annual Meeting / Convention. Congratulations, Carl!
The Manitoba Chapterof the CAHS and Lyncrest airport invite you to the Soaring High Aviation Film Fest, a new activity starting in January. Each month, Bill Zuk will guest host an evening featuring two aviation-related feature films and documentaries. On 10 January, grab some popcorn and catch Fly Away Home (1996) followed by Flight (1996). The subsequent dates are 7 February, 7 March, and 11 April.
I would personally like to thank the CAHS Toronto Chapter for inviting me to speak at their November meeting. The Chapter was a great host and I thoroughly enjoyed speaking with members about Canadian nose art during the Second World War. Not only was it a fun time, but I also received an aviation-themed gift from the Chapter afterwards!

Canada's Aviation Hall of Fame - New Inductees
On 30 May 2013 in Ottawa, Canada's Aviation Hall of Fame will induct four new members and honour one Belt of Orion recipient at its 40th annual gala dinner and ceremony.
The new members will be:

Victor R. Bennett, former Innotech Aviation chief executive

James “Stocky” Edwards, WWII Royal Canadian Air Force fighter pilot and command leader
-
Joseph Fernand “Frank” Henley, former executive of Maritime Central Airways, Nordair and Hydro Quebec
-
John Sandford, former president of de Havilland Canada
Canadian Pacific Air Lines Ltd. will be presented with the Belt of Orion award.
In a press release issued earlier this month Tom Appleton, CAHF chairman of the board, said, “The CAHF is proud to honour these four individuals and a pioneering airline for their significant contributions to Canadian aviation, and to Canada’s development as a nation. Our 2013 inductees come from backgrounds that span the width of Canada’s professional aviation industry, as well as its internationally renowned air force.”

Museum and Restoration Initiatives
Bomber Command Museum of Canada
On 27 December, the Bomber Command Museum of Canada was featured on CBC National News who reported on BCATP instructor Gordon Jones and his new biography written by Annie Gafiuk. The Museum recently held an event to launch this book, and Mr. Jones has been flying flypasts for the Museum for over twenty years. You can order the publication through their website here.

Canadian Air and Space Museum
The Canadian Air and Space Museum continues to run a campaign to raise $500,000 with the hope it will be put towards building a new museum at Toronto Pearson Airport. So far they have reached just over $20,000, so they still have a long way to go! Help by donating online here or sending a cheque, and remember that all donations over $5 receive a 'thank-you' in return (admission tickets, books, DVDs, etc). For updates on the campaign, join the Museum's mailing list here.
Canada Aviation and Space Museum
In honour of astronaut Chris Hadfield's launch to the International Space Station, the Canada Aviation and Space Museum is hosting an "Off in Space" program during the holidays. Families can learn about space, etc through printmaking, games, and workshops until 6 January.
Canadian Aviation Heritage Centre
The Canadian Aviation Heritage Centre is trying to raise interest in the restoration of their 1941 Westland Lysander (which would make it the only flying example in the Pacific Northwest). The Museum has just about everything needed to restore it to flying condition, so spread the word by checking out their website or 'Like'-ing the project on Facebook.
Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum
The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum has began planning for its 2013 airshow (15-16 June), and recent additions to the line-up include a newly restored de Havilland Mosquito from the Military Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach. You can already purchase tickets for the airshow here!

Western Canada Aviation Museum
On Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays in January, the Western Canada Aviation Museum will be hosting guided tours of their collection of cold weather transport airplanes. As always, the tour is free with a paid admission.
Bits and Bytes
Chris Hadfield Blasts Off!
 On 19 December, 53-year old Canadian astronaut Commander Chris Hadfieldsuccessfully blasted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan for a six-month visit in space that will see him become the first Canadian to command the ISS.
While in space, Chris has been posting statuses and photos to his Twitter account! Follow him at @Cmdr_Hadfield as he posts about the mission and answers questions from followers.
Chris is travelling with his guitar, and one highlight of his journey (though there have been many!) has been his recording of a Christmas carol, "Jewel in the Night," all the way from space. The song was written by his brother, Dave Hadfield, and you can listen to it in YouTube here, and read the lyrics here.
Vintage Wings has a few fantastic posts on their blog written by his brother, Dave Hadfield, as he reflects on the days leading up to the launch. Through heart-warming text and intimate photographs, his posts offer a first-hand look at what it is like to be part of the family of an astronaut.
