For Immediate Release:
February 14, 2011

February 23rd is National Aviation Day –

and the Kick-Off for a Big Year of Canadian Aviation Events

On 23 February 1909, the Silver Dart flew 800 m in Baddeck, NS and Canada entered the age of powered flight. Over a century later, Canadians mark this historic day by celebrating our country’s aviation achievements and ongoing pursuit of aeronautical excellence.

This year things kick off on February 23rd when Transport Canada and Canada’s Aviation and Space Museum (CASM) in Ottawa co-host a Career Day for high school, college, and university students.

There are many other events happening around the country this year:

  • The Canadian Aviation Historical Society (ww.cahs.ca) is holding a conference about Alberta and northern aviation June 22-26th in Edmonton, AB in conjunction with the Alberta Aviation Museum’s AirFest. This year marks several important anniversaries for the Northwest Staging Route, British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, and other important Canadian contributions.

  • Vintage Wings of Canada (www.vintagewings.ca) has several exciting programs going on, including a Yellow Wings commemorative tour of Canada in WWII-era training aircraft. On 17 September 2011 it will also host its annual air show in Gatineau, QC featuring the Canadian Forces Snowbirds.

  • Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame (www.cahf.ca) continues to honour Canadians’ achievements in all areas of aviation with its 38th annual induction 26 May, 2011 at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Mount Hope, ON. This year the following individuals and companies will be honoured:  William “Bill” Wheeler (Toronto); John Crichton (Ottawa); Donald T. Hamilton (Edmonton); Richard (Dick) Ryan (deceased); and Hollinger Ungava Transport.
