 Dear CAHS Member,
One of the significant events that has occurred this summer was the unveiling and dedication of the Bomber Command Memorial in Green Park, London, United Kingdom. The impressive bronze statue commemorates the loss of 55,573 Bomber Command airmen in the Second World War, and honours those of all nations who lost their lives in the war’s bombing campaigns. Almost 20% of the airmen being honoured by this Memorial were Canadian.
The 30-minute ceremony began as Her Majesty the Queen unveiled the nine-foot high sculpture in front of thousands of people from all over the world. Close to 5,000 were Bomber Command veterans, widows, and family members. The dedication concluded with a flyover by the RAF’s last flying Lancaster which dropped thousands of poppies over Green Park as an act of remembrance. The Memorial comes after five years of campaigning by the Bomber Command Association and for many the acknowledgement is “long overdue”:
The response to the statue itself, however, has been overwhelmingly positive, stirring emotions and memories for many surviving Bomber Command vets:
It is important to note that fourty-two Canadian Bomber Command veterans flew overseas to attend the dedication:
It is also significant that many Canadian institutions donated time, money, and manpower to the creation of the Memorial. One, the Bomber Command Museum of Canada, contibuted eight-hundred pounds of aluminum which now forms the ceiling above the sculpture. A team of eleven museum representatives attended the dedication.

July Through Three Decades of Flight
Below are some notable events that occurred in July during early days of Canadian aviation (note some great pioneering ‘firsts’!). Click highlighted text to read some descriptive news articles about the landmark event or the individuals' later career.
15 July 1910
The first airplane flight in Manitoba takes place.
23 July 1913
H. W. Blakeley makes the first night flight in Canada at the Dominion Livestock Show and Fair at Brandon, Man.
 31 July 1913
Alys McKey Bryant becomes the first woman pilot to fly in Canada, over Vancouver, in a Curtiss-type pusher biplane.
7 July 1919
For the first time in Canada, a forest fire is spotted from the air—by Stuart Graham and W. Kahre, aboard a Curtiss HS-2L. (Click to read about their later life adventures).
12 July 1927
For the first time in Canada, airplanes are used to dust crops with fungicide to control wheat rust.
July 1937
 Flying a Lockheed Electra, J. H. Tudhope and J. D. Hunter complete the first dawn-to-dusk trans-Canada flight, between Montréal and Vancouver, in 17 hours and 35 minutes.
 1 July 1938
Lucille Garner and Pat Eccleston are Trans-Canada Airlines’ first flight attendants.

Visit cahs.ca to view our rotating blog feature. This month, regular contributor Mathias Joost looks at the history of the Burnelli CBY-3 Loadmaster, built by Canadian Car and Foundry (CC&F) in Montreal.
 Mathias writes: "The Loadmaster was an aircraft whose benefits from its lifting body design could apparently not overcome its most unusual design. It also could not compete with surplus Second World War Dakotas going for $5,000, which Canadair was refurbishing for Trans-Canada Air Lines, Canadian Pacific Airlines and other customers. In addition, newer designs offering greater speed and comfort. The Loadmaster was simply not the right aircraft at the right time."

Museum and Restoration Initiatives
 Alberta Aviation Museum
Update: The Alberta Aviation Museum has redirected some of its budget to send Sherwood park's 12 Squadron Royal Canadian Air Cadets to the U.K. to represent Canada in the Schools Aerospace Challenge. Read more about the decision here.

Canada Aviation and Space Museum
The Canada Aviation and Space Museum's website has recently featured some great multimedia bits revolving around the museum and its staff and acquisitions:

Watch a video of the installation of their newly acquired CT-114 Tutor.

Watch and listen to "Voices From the Museum", a documentary film series produced by the Canada Aviation and Space Museum in collaboration with Outsiders Films Inc. It focuses on eight men who have left their mark on Canada's aviation history, including a NATO flight instructor, a Spitfire pilot flying in West Africa, an engineer working with computers and the Avro Arrow, and the Director of Flight Ops with de Havilland Canada. Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum
The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum will host its third Fly-In Day on 19 August. landing fees are waived and all visitors occupying an aircraft receive free admission to the Museum!
Vintage Wings of Canada
The aircraft of Vintage Wings have been busy touring the country, fundraising, and making the air show circuit. Heather Fleck, Assistant Chief Pilot at Vintage Wings, reported on their journey to the recent Hamilton Airshow. Check out the post (with photos) here.
 Western Canada Aviation MuseumThe Western Canada Aviation Museum supports the upcoming debut of "Barker's Battle" - a play about Manitoba First World War fighter ace and civil aviation pioneer William Barker - opening soon during the 2012 Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival. It will be playing at the MTC Warehouse (Tom Hendry) Theatre from 19 - 27 July.
