at the next regular monthly meeting of
The Canadian Aviation Historical Society
Kingston Chapter

  • When: Monday, February 16th, 2009 at 7:30pm (doors open 7:00pm)
  • Where: Ongwanada Resource Centre, 191 Portsmouth Ave.
Behind the Health Unit. Plenty of parking.
  • Guest  Speaker: Carl Mills

You’re encouraged to attend as a number of business matters have to be discussed, the program is a unique one and it may well involve YOU - quite directly.

    Here is the Agenda:

    Agenda:

    1. President’s opening remarks and announcements

    2. Annual Elections

As noted at the previous (November 2008) meeting, two members of the present Chapter executive, Treasurer Bruce McLachlan and Program Director Don Connolly, have indicated a desire to step down. Both cite personal obligations and many years of service as the reasons, and are very willing to offer maximum assistance to their replacements. Volunteers are needed.

    3. Promotion of the Centennial of Canadian Powered Flight

At the last meeting a trio of “press releases” was shown which were displayed as potential material for media releases aimed at stimulating interest in aviation history within the local community. Another aim was to possibly attract new chapter members. Again, volunteers to promote interest in these items within the local media were requested, but no progress has ensued. Consequently, our President has accepted the task.

    4. Added Feature(s)

At the January executive meeting it was agreed that, whenever possible, a regular ‘short feature’ at each general meeting should be a brief quiz on aviation history. The winner’s prize - aside from considerable attendant prestige - will be a book of choice from our post-meeting sales table, or one especially donated for the purpose. The losers will benefit from an educational aspect only.

    5. Speaker for the Evening:

Mr. Carl Mills, P.Eng, L/Col CAF Reserve (Ret’d), aviation author and research specialist.

One week before the celebrations at Baddeck NS commemorating the 100th anniversary of powered flight in Canada, we are privileged to witness a preview of a PowerPoint presentation the speaker will be giving there on that special occasion. Titled “The Silver Dart Chronicles”, it will be a 90 min. talk featuring 150 images, many taken from original photos of the 1907-‘10 era. The dialogue will cover the evolution of Dr. Bell’s interest in aviation and the subsequent activities of the Aerial Experiment Association and the Canadian Aerodrome Company.

Details of the design and flights of the aircraft evolved will be supplied along with descriptions and analyses of attendant managerial, legal, political and military involvements. The presentation will close with a brief review of the currently known (12) Silver Dart replicas and artwork images extant. This special project has been sponsored by the Toronto Chapter, and is obviously, very much a “must attend” occasion - regardless of weather conditions!

    6. President’s concluding remarks

    7. Book sale table and social time

Stickers on items offered for sale should be marked with sale price and donors name. The Treasurer will collect all monies and return 50% to each donor. There is a $1 fee for drinks and doughnuts.
